"The mail for you, Remy," Joffrey said, handing a bundle of letters to Remy as she sat at her desk with her morning coffee, going over some paperwork.
"Thank you," Remy said, looking up to smile at Joff. He had already turned around and was walking out the door. Remy shook her head and returned to the stack of mail. She slit them all open, skimming the stuff and sorting it into stacks. The stuff Hadley wouldn't really care about went in one basket, and the important things went into a basket that would be given to Alicia to translate. Thought Remy still wasn't too fond of her, she had to admit that her new co-adviser was pretty necessary. And it was nice to not need to read every document to Hadley.
As she went through the mail she caught sight of an envelope adorned with an URGENT stamp. It had been overnighted from Solas. Interesting. Remy slit it open carefully and let the letter fall out.
It took only seconds to figure out why it had been expressed--Amerie, the Solas overloridian, had passed away. Remy's stomach dropped. The young girl hadn't even been overloridian for a year, and she couldn't have been more than sixteen or seventeen. As she kept reading, Remy felt sick.
A boy, Reid Lessing, had settled as the new overloridian just the night before. It didn't give too many details on Amerie's passing, though Remy was sure more information would be forthcoming. How absolutely tragic. She couldn't stop thinking about the small girl she'd seen a month ago at Kavi's engagement party.
She picked up the letter and walked quickly from her office and back to the bedroom, leaving her morning coffee forgotten on her desk.
"Hadley?" Remy said, her voice sharp and urgent. She walked into the bathroom where he was in the process of taking a shower. "Hadley, you better hurry up, we got something important in the mail."
