It was late, and Arizona hadn't slept. As soon as she left the hospital she had to break the news to her father. Roger didn't even have to hear his daughter say the words. As soon as he saw her face, he broke down. Father and daughter held each other, and cried. They cried until her father was exhausted, and she led him to a guest room and sat with him until he fell asleep. Arizona had decided she would save the rest of the bad news for another day. It was too much to handle right now. That was why Arizona was heading in the opposite direction of her bedroom, and to the backdoor where there was a deck facing the mountains. Even on a horrible night like this, the mountains still took her breath away.
"Kavi," she sighed. "I would give anything to have you standing next to me right now." She briefly wondered what happened to clio when they died. She hoped that he was able to reunite with their mama and Neeva. Arizona sighed shakily, but couldn't hold it in any longer and started to cry quietly.
"Sorry to interrupt," came a voice from the darkness. "But we have a lot to talk about." Kole stepped forward into the dim light shining from Arizona's estate. Arizona gasped, then instantly hurled a flurry of bullet-like stones toward him. However, carrying the newest starpiece that he had acquired, Kole was able to block them without flinching.
"You," growled Arizona. "You have a lot of nerve showing up here!" Seeing Kole's face made her sadness turn into rage. She had never wanted to kill somebody before, but imagining Kole's spine broken in half gave Arizona a sick thrill.
"I could say the same thing," Kole replied, sounding insulted. "Technically, this is my estate now." He grinned at her, "And technically, you're mine."
Arizona spat at his feet. "I will never work for you," she snarled.
Kole smirked and walked close to Arizona until he was on the deck next to her, towering over her. "I thought you'd say something like that," he told her, while menacing tendrils snaked their way up her legs and back. He grabbed her face with one hand and wrench her face up so that she would look him in the eyes. Arizona was now immobilized. "But unfortunately my dear, you don't have a choice!"
Arizona knew he was right. He had her starpiece. Yes, she was still the overloridian of Adhbhar, yes she was stronger than other clio in Adhbhar, but with Kole having control over the starpiece, ultimately she was his slave. A single tear slid down her cheek and Kole smiled. "Good," he said. "I'm glad that you're finally understanding." He pushed her face away roughly and started walking away. "Listen to me Miss Samples," he called. "Adhbhar is now mine, and if I catch you going against my word, everything you have left, I will destroy."
Finally Arizona was released from Kole's shadowy grasp, and she fell to the hard wooden floor of the deck. She looked up in Kole's general direction but he was gone. She had to do something, even if it meant risking her own life for her eilemaiden, but she wasn't going to let Kole take control of everything she knew and loved. She couldn't.
