EVAN's past: Evan was born into a very privileged life. He was the first child of the mayor of Lilycove and her husband, a prominent business man. Because of his mother’s political career and his father’s business career, the family always placed priority on keeping up appearances. The public saw a successful, happy, loving family. In private, things were much messier. There was no love in his parents’ marriage, and they each turned to different lovers and alcohol to cope.
When it came to parenting, his mother took a critical and overbearing approach, while his father was stern and emotionally distant. The most important lesson Evan and his younger siblings learned was to never embarrass the family.
EVAN's present: Evan is now eighteen and recently settled. He hates his parents and wants to rebel, but doesn’t know much outside his privileged upbringing and doesn’t want to jeopardize the comfortable life he has. Therefore he puts up with their rules and demands, and goes along with the “perfect family” façade in public.
His parents want to make sure he only forms connections with “the right clio,” so all his friends are essentially picked from a pre-approved list of wealthy, important kids his own age. This includes his girlfriend, a term he uses in the loosest sense of the word, since he doesn’t actually like her very much. The match was arranged by their families.
